Lupine
(Scientific Name: Lupinus species)
[Common Name(s): Lupine]

Description: Annual or perennial plants growing in clumps with spikes of pea-like flowers and distinctive compound leaves with 5 or more narrow leaflets radiating from a single point. Flowers vary in color but are usually some shade of blue or purple. Seeds are in smooth or hairy pods like those of peas. Height of the plants can vary from a few inches to several feet

Habitat: There are many species of lupine found growing from sea level to high altitudes and from moist, wet areas to rocky, arid slopes, depending upon species. Widespread in Western North America.

POISONOUS: (seeds) Greatest concern of poison is in the seeds. Some species are much more poisonous than others, and although some are reported to have been used for food, all species should be considered poisonous.
