Description:
Annual or perennial plants growing in clumps with spikes of pea-like
flowers and distinctive compound leaves with 5 or more narrow
leaflets radiating from a single point. Flowers vary in color but
are usually some shade of blue or purple. Seeds are in smooth or
hairy pods like those of peas. Height of the plants can vary from a
few inches to several feet
Habitat:
There are many species of lupine found growing from sea level to
high altitudes and from moist, wet areas to rocky, arid slopes,
depending upon species. Widespread in Western North America.
POISONOUS: (seeds) Greatest concern of poison
is in the seeds. Some species are much more poisonous than others,
and although some are reported to have been used for food, all
species should be considered poisonous.
