Wild Strawberry
(Scientific Name: Fragaria species)

Description: There are several varieties of wild strawberries, but all are easily recognized because they resemble the garden varieties in appearance and type of fruit. They are low-growing, and spread by sending out runners which take root; flowers have white petals; leaves have three leaflets, and the fruit is like the garden variety but much smaller.

Habitat: Fields and open woods. Widely distributed. One of the earliest flowers, frequently found blooming as early as February. The fruit appears in June.

Uses: The fruit is fine-flavored, and Indians used it extensively because it is one of the sweetest of the wild fruits. These berries can be eaten raw or be made into jam.
