Yellow Bells
(Scientific Name: Fritillaria pudica)

Description: This small lily is identified by one or two bright yellow nodding flowers which change to a dull red color as they age. Long narrow leaves are scattered along an un-branched stem which is rose colored below the surface of the ground. The plant grows from a flat, waxy-white corm which is surrounded by numerous, tiny rice-like bulblets.

Habitat: Found in dry open areas to about 9000 feet. Widely distributed. This is one of the earliest spring flowers and can be found blooming from the middle of March until June, depending on the elevation. This plant frequently grows in abundance and is easy to dig.

Uses: The starchy corm and green seed pods are excellent either raw or cooked.
