Butte Creek Campout 2005

The Butte Creek Campout is the site of the first annual patrol cook-off. This competition was judged by the adults in attendance in the following categories: 1) Food preparation, completeness (contains the basic components of a meal, main course, vegetable, etc), taste, and patrol participation; 2) Storyline, where the patrol members had to tell a story about their meal; and 3) Presentation, table setup, food appearance, etc. We also experienced practice on a compass course, team building exercises, a one mile compass hike, a fantastic campfire, and on Sunday, the majority of us went for a two hour horseback ride.

Patrols ready?

Blaine and Justin getting ready for the days activities.

Older scouts teaching the new younger scouts how to use a compass and read a pace chart.

Older scouts teaching the new scouts how to site and walk on a compass heading.

Scoutmaster Vermillion teaches a class on knife safety and knife sharpening.

A teamwork building exercise. Don't let that pole touch the ground!

This years pioneering team tries out their gateway design. They are getting ready for Camporee in two months.

Fun in the woods.

Tree Frogs Patrol...with their Coke-a-Cola Chicken. The judges thought this dish was sweet and sassy.

Batmans Patrol...serving succulent steak, salad, vegetables and Sparkling Cider to round out the meal. Judges said that the meat was very well flavored and done to perfection.

Vikings Patrol...with their very creative story about the adventures of London Doyle and his Pa, who stubbed his toe on an edible root they called Pa-toe (now called the potato). Over the years this famous meat dish has changed little, except in name, now called London Broil. The judges rated this meal a 10/10, just like you would find in a 5 star restaurant! Great job guys.

Cobras Patrol...another 10/10 meal with their venison spaghetti sauce, perfectly cooked spaghetti, and well balanced side dishes (even dessert)! They told an excellent story of their European tour where they collected the fine ingredients they used in their meal. To top it off, they improvised a table cloth, secured some candles, and had a place set for each scout! It is my pleasure to present to you, the 2005 Troop 542 Cook-off Champions! This was a tough job for the judges who deliberated over 45 minutes to determine the winner. Great job Cobras!

Campfire, a fine ending for a great day. At the conclusion of this campfire, we had the great opportunity to permanently retire two US flags. Click here to view the flag retirement ceremony.

Here we are, starting our two hour tour. (That sure sounds familiar...)

A field of horses and riders.

More horses and riders. We had 33 scouts and adults out riding horses!

Only half way through Mr. Woodell!

Oooooooooo....

Mr. Woodell takes a moment to pray before the trip home.

The Butte Creek Campout turned out to be one of the best campouts we have had to date. We had 38 scouts and adults in attendance with perfect weather (warm days and cool nights). The cook-off was a blast; we worked well together during the team building exercises; we practiced and taught compass skills to the new scouts; we retired two honored flags; we rode horses; and we just plain had fun!
