Ape Cave Campout
June 24th, 2005

Another fun activity that we did at this campout was a Fire and Water game that Bryan created inspired by the reality show "Survivor". This game required each scout to explore his ability to plan, his ability to make fire, and his endurance to finish the race...

Dr. D introduced the "Survivor" game and laid down the ground rules.

The primary goal is to burn the string thus releasing the flag.
Round 1: the older scouts...

Step 1: build a good strong fire in the fire pit using the materials provided.

David and Josh just getting started with their fire.

Step 2: once you have a good strong fire, retrieve water from the 5 gallon bucket 15 feet away and pour it into your leaky water reservoir.
When you have sufficient water weight in your reservoir the fire pit will rise moving the fire close enough to the string to catch it on fire. Keep adding water to the reservoir to hold the fire pit in position or your fire pit will drop removing the heat from the string.

After 12 minutes and 48 seconds a tired Mack wins first place!
After Bryan completed his task all he could do was collapse from exhaustion.

Round 2: the younger scouts...
Austin, the youngest scout, takes first place in round two. Congratulations!

Andy finally builds the perfect fire and after only a few trips to the water bucket, the string burned through and his flag was released.
Blaine has a good strong fire and his fire pit in place...it's only a few seconds before his flag is also released!

Before going home after a great weekend of fun, we spent a few minutes playing Mr. Thames favorite campout game "Holey Board."

A special "Thank You" to the Thames family for allowing us to use your property for this campout.
