Lewis & Clark Hike

Cascade Pacific Council has created a patch program to encourage scouts to participate in the bicentennial of Lewis & Clarks' great journey west. Several Troop 542 members and their families have decided to take that journey and complete their own Year of Discovery.

In the Lewis and Clark tradition...(spelling mistakes intended)

Friday August 26th, 2005 - To day we left the big city of Portland on a journy to discover the past. Our home away from home would be a camp site on BSA property, Camp Royce Finel.
The only easy way to the camp site is by boat. Our expidition embarked with a 12-foot row boat and a canooe knowing full well that several trips across the murky headwaters would need to be made just to get the equipment to the camp site, not to mention the people.

Saturday August 27th, 2005 - The long awaited and in some cases dreaded day of our hike has finally arrived. The goal is to hike from Cape Disappointment campground to the Lewis & Clark Interpretative Center (take a
tour), then onto Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and finally hike back to the campground.

Our party as it reaches it's first goal, the Lewis & Clark Interpretative Center.

The next goal of our hike looms like a giant beacon in the distance. OK, it really wasn't that far.

On our way to the lighthouse our party discovers some ancient ruins. Time to discover...

Bryan and CJ peer into a near bottomless pit. OK, not that deep but it sounded good.
Could this be Clark of the famous Lewis and Clark Expidition? At first glance it sure looks like Clark.

Our party at the base of the ancient lighthouse.

Here are the three leaders of our group that made this hike worth while. Thanks for a great time.

Along the way we experienced wildlife much as Lewis & Clark would have 200 years ago (minus the chain link fence in the background.)
What better way to end a long hike than to paddle home for a nap?

Due to the long hike and expected exhaustion, we planed to go out for dinner at a local establishment. During our departure for dinner, one of our party (I won't mention any names...CJ) decided to swamp the canooe and go for an unexpected swim.

After a fine meal and good company we returned to the head waters of our camp for one last sleepless night before the long trek home.

Sunday August 28th, 2005 - Our two year...I mean two day journey now comes to a safe close with all desired requirements accomplished. Welcome Home Troop Discovery!
